At MD ONE-ON-ONE we work hard at trying to educate our patients about how diet and exercise can lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. A recent study in the American Journal of Epidemiology reported that “men and women with diabetes, either type 1 or type 2, are more likely than the general population to fracture a hip. Twelve studies that examined the link between type 2 diabetes and hip fracture found that diabetics were 70 percent more likely to fracture a hip. Six studies found a statistically significant increased risk in hip fracture for type 1 diabetes patients, who were more than 6-times more likely to break a hip”

Peanut Butter is not only a heart healthy food, but it now seems that it can help decrease the risk of diabetes. The Journal of the American Medical Association reports finding that “consuming one ounce of nuts or peanut butter (about two tablespoons) at least five days a week can lower the risk of developing diabetes by almost 30 percent.” So now you can enjoy the snack you have loved since you were young and keep your body healthy. It is best to stick to a brand that does not contain polyunsaturated fat. Some brands to try would be Skippy Natural or Smucker”‘s Natural Peanut Butter. You can enjoy peanut butter with apples, celery or even melt a little in the microwave and add to non-fat plain yogurt for a great dessert.
